Home: Onion Rings

The onion ring is a popular dish sold in many fast food restaurants. It's especially popular in the US, the probable country of origin, and to a lesser extent, other English speaking countries such as the UK and Australia.

The dish is simple to prepare and cook. A onion is cut into rings, then dipped in a liquid such as milk, and then is covered in either,

  • Batter
  • Flour
  • Breading

The covered onion ring is then deep fat fried. The size of the onion ring varies to taste, with some thick cut and others thin cut. Spices and herbs are sometimes added to the flour or breading to make a more tasty dish.

While the traditional onion ring is made with whole onion. The one disadvantage with this technique is a slight difficulty of conveniance. If the consumer does not thoroughly bite through the ring, the onion can separate from the batter leaving a messy result. For mass producers, making a consistant ring of the same dimension from whole onion is especially problematic.

Many fast food chains and manufacturer's developed a solution to this problem, and in doing so probably a cheaper and consistant way to produce onion rings. Instead of a whole onion ring, they instead fill the ring with onion paste. The dish is easier to eat, but the taste is compromised.

Alongside deep fried onion rings, onion ring crisps are a popular snack.
